Last Saturday, I ventured forth on what will be my last outing until the end of my stay here. I was lured to Salzburg again. The day started out with rain as it had for the last several days. Quite gloomy weather.
Caught the train and to my surprise, it was raining all the way as well. However, this presented magnificent views to those who looked out of the window. The train journey took us thru tracks that ran along the mountainside. Enchanting scenes of villages in the valley below the train enfolded before my eyes. To add to the beauty of the scenery, I could see clouds floating below me, seemingly to hover above cottages which are of toy-like proportions. I call this 'The Land beneath the Clouds'.
A few cottages perched on the mountainside itself, to assert their independence from their neighbours below. At some points, the clouds were so thick that the valley was obscured from view and I could only see clouds swirling around the pine trees which populated the mountainside.
After the mountains, the train is again on flat land. A river runs through it on the left side of the train. A mist seems to hover above the river. I looked upon miles and miles of green countryside, a shade of green that is a deep shade of apple green.
A mere thirty minutes from Salzburg one can see an imposing castle impossibly perched at the top of a hill, surrounded completely by pine trees. Invaders of long ago would have a difficult time to overtake this castle since they would have to climb the hill first. I wondered how was the castle built. There seems to be no road leading up to it.
The train journey back was just as enchanting. I watched until the sun went to sleep. Slowly, night emerged and at 9.30 I could no longer make out the silhouette of the mountains in the far distance.
And this ends my tale of a magical train ride.
