In the second episode of Glee, we find out that gay looking guy, Kurt, secretly has a crush on Football Star.
Kurt’s father is not happy to find his son wearing tights and dancing when he came home early one day. He looks doubtful as Kurt blatantly lied and said that all the football guys are wearing tights too, as it helps with athletic performance.
In an attempt to make his father proud of him, Kurt joins the football team where they’re just not into music, dancing and gay guys. After showing them that he has the required skills to be a kicker, the guys relented and incorporated dancing into their practice sessions.
Towards the end of a football match where their team was losing, Football Star decides to activate Plan Kurt where everyone will dance. Afraid of looking like idiots yet knowing they have nothing else to lose, the rest of the team grudgingly agreed.
Cue music
The whole team starts dancing, the crowd follow suit and the opposing team doesn’t know what to make of it. Kurt kicks the ball over the post, scores a touchdown, and the crowd erupted with a resounding cheer as the team won their first game.
After the game, back home, Kurt decides to come clean and tell his father that he’s not straight. Surprisingly, his father replied he knows and loves him all the same. They hugged – tightly. Before his father left the room, he turned around and asked, “Are you sure?” Kurt replied yes and continues with his facial.
In another episode, featuring one of my favourite songs from Glee, “Defying Gravity”, Kurt decides to challenge Rachel for the lead female singing part. Both will sing this song and the rest of the Glee team will vote for the best singer. Will warns Kurt that this song has a high F, a note that Kurt has struggled with. Kurt decides to intensify his practice session.
His hard work paid off and he happily told his father he has managed to hit the high F. He then noticed that his dad was upset about something. He finds out that his father has been receiving crank calls. He knows it is because of his preference for guys, singing and unique dressing style.
The day for the challenge arrives. Kurt steps to the front, the lights are dimmed except for the spotlight on him. Kurt starts singing
Something has changed within me
Something is not the same
I'm thru with playing by the rules of someone else's games
Too late for second guessing
Too late to go back to sleep
It's time to trust my instincts
Close my eyes and plead
It's time to try defying gravity
I think I'll try defying gravity
Kiss me goodbye, I'm defying gravity
He looks around and then decides to flub the high F as he sings
You won't bring me down
Everyone looked disappointed that he didn’t managed to sing it well. Rachel sang hers effortlessly and was declared the winner.
Back home, Kurt broke the news to his father that he didn’t get the part. His father was puzzled, “But I thought you managed to nail the high F, or whatever it was”. Kurt confessed he intentionally sang off-key after seeing how upset his father was over the crank calls. He knew the situation would only get worse if he took the lead female singer part. He told his dad, “I do want to be a star, and I will be one some day. But as much as I love being a star, I love you more”. They both hugged.
