A Date at the Gym

Fri 27 Nov 2009

Woke up really, really late today – almost 10 AM. This has never happened before ! I guess it’s the combination of being out late last night and having Toastmasters meetings every night since Tuesday.

Today, apart from trying to finish my 8 – 10 minutes inspiring speech which is due for presentation on Sun Nov 29 (no, it’s not done yet !), decided to head to the gym for a date, I mean, a class with my favourite Body Pump instructor, Myke. He happens to have a dazzling smile as well.

I have not been to a Pump class for the last two weeks. Which means ... it’s going to be a torture session with Myke. I am on time for the 2 PM class. My nightmare of not being able to get a parking space was quickly dispelled when I easily found a spot at B2. I think it’s going to be my lucky day.

Class was not too crowded as it was a public holiday. Fourteen of us waited for Myke to torture us, with the guys outnumbering the girls, 10 to 4. He walks in. I am already dreading the bottom-halves in the squat track before the music even begins.

The warm-up track started with one of my current favourite songs for Pump class – Bleeding Love by Leona Lewis. Great song, great singer, what more can one asked for ?

For the second track, the squat track, we had Madly, Deeply, Truly by Savage Garden, another one of my favourite songs. I hereby officially declare that today is my lucky day. Ok, maybe not so lucky. The bottom-halves are killing me ... slowly ... in pain, can’t wait for the music to stop.

Next, the chest track. I know what’s going to happen. Myke, who seems to think that it is his sovereign right to torture us, is going to make us do the entire track without a break. He can be so cruel at times.

For the tricep track, decided to take it easy and used the doughnut for the kick-backs. In my defence, it should be duly noted that I was not able to attend BodyPump classes for the last two weeks due to circumstances beyond my control.

This is not the first time I am wondering this. How can a simple exercise cause such pain ? I need Leonardo da Vinci to explain this to me in layman’s term – why is calve raises = pain ?

Aargh !! No, that’s not me screaming. That’s my leg muscles screaming as Myke ordered all of us to remain in position until the music stops. Yes, it is possible to be in pain and thinking that I should reward myself with an ice-cream cone after class. Finally ! The music stops and the lunge track is over. Memory of pain slowly fades away as we were told to jog on the spot.

Shoulder track = lots of push ups = agony. Need I say more ?

The cool-down track is a relief as I can just lie down on my back and relax. Soothing music, no more pain.

At the end of the class, Myke walked by and gave me one of his dazzling smile. Alas, I was too exhausted to give him a proper smile. I think my hair looks a mess as well. This is definitely not how it should be. If only I could hit the <Rewind> button and redo this scene.

That concludes my one hour class with my favourite Pump instructor, who coincidentally happens to have a dazzling smile. Now, to reward myself with an ice-cream cone !
